Chapter 8: Health

The next afternoon found me lying on the new couch in Tier’s sitting room. That morning had brought several surprises, and not all good. The first was that the king had decided to fix up his suite a bit, seeing as how he rarely destroyed the furniture anymore. The second surprise was there was a sickness affecting the city of Valeoss and we needed Beryl. Fey were being struck down and at least a dozen were in critical condition. There was nothing I could do but send for my sister. She should be able to fix things, or if not she’d at least know the paragon of healing that could. As a result, Pearl and Eric had left that morning. Gef had suggested they go by river so they would arrive back home and return faster. Eric agreed quickly. He also told me that they’d send Beryl ahead as soon as they got home and that the rest of the family would follow as soon as they arranged things with the town.

I was jarred from my musings when Tier whined and cuddled closer. He’d changed into an elkhound during our morning workout and had decided that I needed to rest a little. Naturally, his way of conveying this decision was to flop down at my feet and send me images of a bed and me scratching his ears. Then he justified it by sending me a picture of me yawning. I didn’t buy it, particularly since I wasn’t tired. Most likely he just wanted to spend the afternoon being petted. Still, I wasn’t going to say anything about it. There’s nothing quite like cuddling a giant ball of fluff when you are missing your family. And I was missing them. A lot.

“Did I ever tell you about my first time around horses?” I asked, trying to redirect my thoughts.

He shook his head gently, reluctant to move any further.

I smiled at the memory. “I was five and my father had died just a few months before. Mother was spending a lot of time with Roderick. He’d been my father’s best friend and knew that we were in financial straits, so he was going over Mother’s ledgers weekly to help her budget and make ends meet. She hated taking anything for free and wouldn’t let him help anymore than that. Anyway, Roderick had offered to have Eric watch me for the afternoon so she could relax for a bit.

“Now, I had seen horses before, but never close up. We didn’t have the money for one and my father had been allergic to most animals. He said it was why he became a sailor, to stop sneezing.” I snickered, remembering his expression when he said it. Tier joined me when I passed the memory to him, a slightly fuzzy image of a man pretending to sneeze so hard that he fell over. My father was very silly when he wanted to be.

“Eric was in his late teens and not thrilled to be stuck watching me.
